Pakistani Muslim Wedding Traditions: An Overview

Muslim weddings are celebrated on a grand scale for a minimum period of 3 days. The weddings can be conducted at any time as unlike the other faiths muslims are not worried about auspicious times. The wedding ceremony known as Nikah can occur at the bridegroom’s residence or at a place convenient enough for both parties.

A few wedding rituals common to Muslim weddings are shared below:

Mehndi:

A Muslim wedding starts with the mehndi ceremony in most parts of the country. Though the concept is not part of Islamic traditions and is mainly inspired from the neighbouring country, it is celebrated to add to wedding celebrations. The ceremony is attended by most of the females in the family. Girls and ladies sing songs to mark the wedding celebration. Bride is dressed mainly in yellow and green colors whereas the men are dressed in kurta shalwar with a stole commonly known as ‘dupatta’ around their neck. The ceremony is served with the traditional halwa puri and naan channay.

Baraat:

Baraat is the actual wedding day. Qazi, the muslim clergy officiates the marriage ceremony known as Nikah to bond the bride and groom as a couple. Both the bride and groom need to show their consent to be officially bonded with each other for a lifetime. After Nikah, rituals such as doodh pilai and Jutta chupai take place. Traditional food such as Qorma, Biryani, Chicken roast etc is served with naan, raita, salad and the cold drinks. The ceremony ends with the farewell of bride known as rukhsati in the local language.

Valimah:

Valimah is the last day of the wedding. It is hosted by the groom’s family to announce the wedding. There are no traditions and rituals that are followed on this day.

Post Wedding Rituals

Post wedding rituals for Pakistani muslims include a breakfast ceremony at the groom’s house. The family of the bride sends breakfast to the groom’s home. There is also another event known as chauthi in which the bride visits her parents with her husband and in-laws after the wedding.
