An Overview of Kashmiri Muslim Matrimony

Kashmir is always referred to as the heaven on earth. It is the land of beautiful lakes, valleys and mountain peaks. Kashmiri people bear a resemblance with people in the Northern India. Kashmir has a diversified culture and caste system. Majority of the Kashmiri population is Muslim. Bridal Wear for Kashmiri Pandits

Kashmiri brides wear colorful outfits with color and glitz. Kashmiri pandits wear a headgear known as Kalpush which is an extensive cap folded three or four times. It is lined with silk or cotton from inside. The entire head wear is known as tarang. 


Bridal wear contains saree, lehenga, suit in red color if not pink tones or yellow shades. The golden thread work is known as zari work and is blended with Kashmiri embroidery to have a spectacular look on a bride. Dupatta is worn over the head wear to further beautify the look of the Kashmiri pandit bride.

Jewelry

Jewelry holds a lot of importance for a Kashmiri pandit bride. Brides wear heavy gold jewelry around the neck. Payaal is worn around the foot with a special ornament known as dejharoo. Dejharoo is a pair of gold pendants on a gold chain with holes in ear lobes. It holds the same importance as it does for kashmiri pandits. A waist band is also important and is two meter and a half in length.

Grooms

Kashmiri grooms also wear a traditional dress. It is called pheran. He also wears a waist band which is long and broad. A sword is also attached to the waist band with Gordastar tied on the groom’s head. However, the traditions are changing. A number of youngsters prefer wearing kurta or formal suits in marriage. Kashmiri pundits wears embroidered shoes known as pazar. Groom’s looks are furthered enhanced  by putting ruby beads around the neck.

Kashmiri Muslim

Muslims in Kashmir also celebrate their wedding with a lot of enthusiasm. Women wear beautiful dresses decorated with embroidery with a head wear called Kasaba.  The cloth is available in different colors and is held by trinkets and silver pins. 
It is also decorated with embellishments and gold embroidery hanging on the forehead. The brides wear bunch of silver jewelry the  beauty of which can be notified by a person from distance. The jewelry also includes Jhoomar style earrings supported by thick silver chain, bracelets and paayal around the ankle.
Kashmiri muslim groom also wears a pheran with a broad belt. He also wears a Muslim cap to depict devotion towards Islam. Wedding attire play a key role in the marriage ceremony of a bride and groom. Kashmiri brides and grooms have the most unusual marriage attires to showcase their culture with utmost simplicity. This adds to the feel and beauty of their marriage.
